Backlight faults
iPad backlight repair — an image is there, you just can't see it.
If your iPad's screen looks black but you can just make out a faint image under bright light or a torch, the panel is working — the backlight driving it has failed. Replacing the screen won't fix that, because the fault is on the board, not the glass.
The fixed £35 diagnostic covers the assessment described below and both-way UK tracked shipping. If you approve the repair quote, the fee is deducted from that quote. No repair work starts without your approval.
The symptom
Backlight failure looks like this
The tell-tale sign is a ghost image, not total blackness:
- Screen appears black, but a faint image is visible under a torch or bright light
- Display dims suddenly then goes fully dark
- Backlight flickers before failing, or comes and goes with pressure on the case
- Went dark shortly after a drop or a screen replacement elsewhere
Likely causes
What actually failed
Backlight driver failure
The IC that boosts and drives the backlight LEDs is a well-known failure point — it fails independently of the display panel itself.
Backlight filter or fuse
A blown backlight filter component can cut power to the LEDs entirely while leaving the rest of the display working normally.
Connector damage
Drop damage can crack or loosen the backlight connector on the board, interrupting power to the panel without damaging the glass.
Damage from a previous repair
Screens replaced with the battery still connected can blow backlight components at that exact moment — a common cause of a dark screen right after a repair.
What the diagnostic finds
What the £35 assessment actually does.
- Known-good backlight testing to confirm the panel itself is undamaged
- Backlight driver and filter circuit measurement on the board
- Connector inspection under magnification for drop or repair damage
- A written finding — board repair, panel replacement, or both — priced before you approve
The findings arrive in writing with the quote. You approve, decline or extend — the fee terms are explained in the FAQ.
Describe the fault once — the booking form fills itself.
Tech2Fix Intelligent Intake reads your description, identifies the likely service route and pre-fills the booking for you to review. Completed repairs carry a 90-day warranty on the specific fault repaired.

iPad no display FAQ
How do I check if it's a backlight fault myself?
Shine a torch at a low angle across the screen while it's on — if you can make out a very faint image or the lock screen, the panel is alive and the backlight circuit is the fault. That's genuinely useful information to include when you book.
I already replaced the screen and it's still dark. Why?
Because the fault is behind the screen, on the board — the new panel shows the same nothing because it's never being driven. This is one of the most common cases we see after a parts-only repair elsewhere.
Is backlight repair cheaper than a full screen replacement?
Often, yes — it's a targeted board repair rather than a full panel swap, and if you've already bought a new screen unnecessarily, the diagnostic will tell you before you spend anything more.
