Three places a display fault can live
The display panel
Cracked or failed panels are the simple case, on any brand. Diagnosis confirms the panel is the fault before you pay for one — not after.
The backlight circuit
A faint ghost image with no illumination usually means backlight driver or filter failure on the board — a screen replacement won't fix it.
Board-level image path
Drop damage can crack connector joints or display IC solder. A new screen shows the same black nothing because the board never sends it an image.
Previous repair damage
Screens replaced with the battery connected can blow backlight components at that moment, on most phone designs. If your black screen followed a repair elsewhere, say so at booking.

Almost certainly yes. A display-path fault doesn't touch storage. In the worst case, a working display path can sometimes be restored temporarily just to extract your data.
